(Concentrated oxygen doesn't pair nicely with open flames.) </p><p>He continued some design work and mentoring while gradually winding down the shop and distributing tools to where they could continue to be used well by the next generation of blacksmiths. (One of his mentees even went on to win “Forged in Fire.”) That process, and moving to be closer to family took quite a bit of time over the next couple of years. </p><p>Fortunately he never had to slow down entirely; he always had a very active mind and he turned his attention to finishing some long term writing and archiving projects for the family. He resumed a bit of gardening and nature study which he'd always loved and always continued lots of reading and study. </p><p>You may be happy to know that he had a couple more very good years in him, and he was highly productive even to his last day. David passed away on October 19, 2020 with impressive grace and dignity and the nearby family gathering to support each other. He even managed to avoid the famous COVID craziness this year, but as he would likely say, "something will always get you eventually anyway." </p><p>He put a lot of preparation work into making sure everyone was psychologically prepared for the inevitable, and I think he'd be glad to know that he left us feeling very happy for the time we all had with him. </p><p style="text-align: center;">- = - = - </p><p>He also really wanted to <b>help other creative people</b> by sharing things he learned and invented over the years. So, although the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180508061949/http:/www.persimmonforge.com:80/" target="_blank">old shop website</a> no longer exists, and this journal will not have new entries and will not be monitored very actively, we will try to check on this site periodically to make sure that this content <b>stays readable and searchable</b> for as many years as possible. (If there are any major problems with the site, you can <b>contact</b> his son to check on it, by email to "keithdke at gmail dot com".) </p><p><br /></p><p>There is a lot of content here (over 500 posts) but blogspot does not always make it easy to determine or highlight which posts people find the most useful, so do use the search feature, and when you find something helpful or interesting we encourage you to share it further -- link to it or even copy or repurpose some of the content, just so long as you remember to credit David and provide a link to his original posts. </p><p>Specifically, the family has responded to a request from BAM, the Blacksmith Association of Missouri, to reuse/reprint David's writings. BAM was one of the places where David met a lot of nice people, learned, and got inspiration. </p><p>- <a href="http://www.bamsite.org/">http://www.bamsite.org/</a> </p><p>- <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Blacksmiths-Association-of-Missouri-410386702369131/">https://www.facebook.com/Blacksmiths-Association-of-Missouri-410386702369131/</a> </p><p>We hope you continue to find his explanations and observations to be useful and enjoyable reading. </p><p>- The Family of David Edwards </p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwERk_XBvQ4b9ihNQ-M2-iD-zlpY6uyM2voh5OkS1-Tt0b7iix8UsIMkyGZVAOegBASa9TPVH9SeO44zoMZyD6txI7MWMbArqo_naRWdG8pOQhpq166JFpejJQ9Dp6fmTt0nUR4PPefQ/s1567/DJE+Cropped.jpeg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1567" data-original-width="1088" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwERk_XBvQ4b9ihNQ-M2-iD-zlpY6uyM2voh5OkS1-Tt0b7iix8UsIMkyGZVAOegBASa9TPVH9SeO44zoMZyD6txI7MWMbArqo_naRWdG8pOQhpq166JFpejJQ9Dp6fmTt0nUR4PPefQ/w222-h320/DJE+Cropped.jpeg" width="222" /></a></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZbGIhrtwV7Bs08cT9eB-EZRtqduGa5tOkXU9WwuHrJNIZTUoAqRa_qtixQ5WFDTCZDlY-GF-eu_cCVFjvDo09iibcgd2CfaaYQyBwa9Mq4UWzx076Alg82F8jLf8UcmCKWtgiRPITDw/s640/IMG_0299.BMP" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Demonstrating" border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZbGIhrtwV7Bs08cT9eB-EZRtqduGa5tOkXU9WwuHrJNIZTUoAqRa_qtixQ5WFDTCZDlY-GF-eu_cCVFjvDo09iibcgd2CfaaYQyBwa9Mq4UWzx076Alg82F8jLf8UcmCKWtgiRPITDw/w480-h640/IMG_0299.BMP" title="Demonstrating" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Demonstrating</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://issuu.com/emporiagazette/docs/emporialiving2014/46" target="_blank"><img alt="(Alternate cover from a local magazine)" border="0" data-original-height="521" data-original-width="403" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj51OqAjmB-85HRtSk_XHkZaIBFolKTKGahKokEqe70jwfHHdSQN-NVob8CNgnfABvOjV0lMAhA4jRhO-A3b-zcYFkMHFHuudTiMV2iARVYRbRVJzYHSCAtPSWTVa6fJIKR61HpaY9Saw/s16000/1493150_218920574957776_1037736442_n.jpg" title="(Alternate cover from a local magazine)" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://issuu.com/emporiagazette/docs/emporialiving2014/46" target="_blank">Magazine Article</a><br /></div><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p>K Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05985619734152268618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2475380175912337422.post-27900878288616179512020-12-08T23:41:00.001-06:002021-03-01T01:05:25.081-06:00Archive List of All Posts<script type="text/javascript" src="http://github.com/downloads/jhwilson/Create-a-Blogger-archive-page/Make-Blogger-Archive-Page.js">

<span style="-webkit-font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Sometime in the distant past of my school years I learned about the Greek mathematicians who obsessed over the golden ratio. About 40 years later I crossed the path of that strange number again when I attended a blacksmith demonstration and was shown a proportional divider which was being used to scale a larger element in relationship to a smaller element. This was another refutation of my childhood pronouncement that there wasn’t any point to learning math because it didn’t apply to anything in my life.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I long ago rejected that original proposition and now embrace the usefulness of math. On the other hand, this is a tool which I have used a few times but never really discovered how to integrate much of that into my design work.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;">Last night I received a phone call from The Amazing Scott Miller. He had found the solution to most of my puzzle of 2/17/17. After a lot of image searching he discovered the tool is a slide-hammer type of nail or staple puller. I only have part of the tool. Searching for Keen Kutter nail puller will lead to a number of images and there are similar tools made by other manufacturers.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Twenty plus years ago I had a lot of fun stopping at antique stores and flea markets looking for blacksmithing tools and artifacts as we traveled.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Back then prices were very reasonable and the supply of interesting finds was plentiful. In just a few years I found everything I needed to get started setting up my blacksmithing shop.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Most of the time I was well informed about what I was buying and could make wise choices. Occasionally i would see something unfamiliar but intriguing. A tool collector I knew had advised me to buy anything interesting which i had never seen before it it was in good condition and affordable. That advise never failed me that I am aware of.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>This may the the exception to the rule. I don’t know that this object was supposed to do and it might not even be authentic.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Only recently did the memory of this item creep back into my consciousness. Quite by accident while doing a Google image search for something I got off on the Keen Kutter path. As I scrolled down through jillions of images I realized the only thing I owned with the logo was probably on my forge room wood bench and I could not recall handling it for a very long time.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I found it and inspected it closely for the first time and noted a previously unnoticed detail. I’ll get to that at the end.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>A couple of times I’ve actually used the tool. When I was gardening a lot I used it to slip over the top of a rebar stake and it helped make the driving easier. At least once in the shop I experimented with using it to assist in upsetting the end of a bar.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;">I’ve been thinking about sharing some opinions formed from my experience working with blacksmithing project clients. My experience is limited in several dimensions, so use my generalizations with caution.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I’ll plan to do this a little bit at a time as a thing occurs to me and tag them with a “dealing with clients” label so they can eventually be grouped by sorting if anyone desires.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>This first installment is inspired by a current experience - a request for a handrail bid. Unfortunately, I didn’t read the name carefully enough and thought it was a request for repeat work, as I had already made a handrail for the person I had in mind about ten years ago. In actuality, it was coming from a relative of that client. I did respond promptly but included some references to my earlier work which were irrelevant. Great start.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Thankfully, the potential client graciously emailed with additional details and didn’t highlight my mistake. So, I suppose, my first piece of advice - Rule One - is to pay careful attention and think.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>My broader perspective relates to staying organized to prevent misunderstandings in correspondence. My wife handles all the incoming email and passes on to me what is appropriate. My strategy to handling the back and forth is to label each computer file with a number which keeps the correspondence files in chronological sequence. I can review the entire sequence again and again to make sure I am comprehending all the serial changes in the plan. Rule Two - find a method to archive all correspondence in entirety and in chronological sequence.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The subtitle of Dealing with Clients is My lectures to Myself.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;">I don’t recall how I stumbled upon to this little example of elegant design and simple forging but it fascinates me. There are many varieties of safety hooks but this is the only antique forged one I have found.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>According to the article - “Safety hooks were important for safely hoisting buckets of dirt and rock to the surface from shafts where miners remained below.” Scroll down to see the hook image. </span><br />

<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>For some reason I always thought of a hook as being shaped like most fish hooks - a simple J hook with the shank leading into the end hook on the tangent line. To me the name changed to a crook when there was a kink bend at the tangent point to bring the shank into a line pointing to the center of the hook arc.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Usually when I need a short hook I make an S hook. If I need a long hook I make a crook type. These extended hooks are almost always used outdoors to hang nest boxes, feeders and garden ornaments. The largest use 1/2” round stock and have approximately 5” diameter crooks and are 2’ to 4’ in length. The throat opens enough to pass over the limb being used. I use them to hang large nest boxes. Tis has been a great predator deterrent.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>My smaller hooks are made from 5/16” round. I make them in various lengths to hang feeders near the house. Having a collection of various lengths makes it easy to adjust the height for easy filling and the best viewing. The end crooks on these are approximately 3/4” diameter. The throat opening just 3/8” or so.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 16px;">

<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Anatomical terms can be confusing when describing the crook. Is the gap in the ring the mouth or throat? Is the open center of the hook the eye? It may be best to describe the opening to the hook in degrees from the center of the radius - open 60º or open 100º etc. Or we could use the clock-face analogy. Most of the hooks I make have an opening between 2 and 10 o’clock or between 1 and 11 o’clock. </span> Just measuring the opening may give the clearest description. </div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Making an S hook may be a good way to start off with a beginner. It involves the basic processes of tapering and bending and it provides an opportunity to discuss some design details. Even this simple project involves issues of the functional physics and the visual impact of the finished form.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The basic geometry is usually two partial circles connected by a straight line segment. They are oriented to suggest an S shape. Commonly the tips point toward each other and the opening to the hook is about half of the hook diameter. A lot of variations are possible and some look more appealing than others. Again, I used the SketchUp drawing program to play around wit h some ideas.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Some parameters which contribute to variation include: the diameter of the parent stock, the length of the straight run of the body vs the length of the tapers, the diameter of the hooks, the distance which separates the hooks, and the ratio of the length of the hook to the width.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Most commercial S hooks end with blunt cross-section tips. It doesn’t look very interesting but the maximum strength of the stock is utilized by not including any taper. Our intuitive sense of physics suggests the full diameter of the stock should extend as far as the hang points. Starting the taper before that point of the arc can make the hook look flimsy. Starting the taper somewhat beyond the hang point makes it look more robust.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>My preference is to keep this simple object rather simple - round stock, no special ornamentation of the shank and tips which point toward each other and don’t curl in or out. Later I’ll write a bit about crook hooks where my opinion differs.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I tried to recall projects in which I used S hooks. Pot racks and chandeliers account for most. My largest commonly made hooks are about 6” long and most are 2” - 4”.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The stock I have used in those runs from 1/4” to 3/8”. I tried to come up with a rule of thumb about the length-width ratio that looked best and concluded that it looks tolerable between .3 and .5 and best between .37 and .42.</span></div>

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>When focusing on the hook diameter I decided that when the stock diameter is about a third of the hook diameter the hook will look robust and when the stock diameter gets down to about a sixth it can look frail. Perhaps delicate would be a kinder interpretation. Starting the taper no earlier than the hang-point also give a more stout look.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>S hooks are one of the simple products I offer in the Prairie PastTimes gallery. I make a batch of them and eventually they sell out and I have to make another bunch. There are four standard sizes of stock (nails) and the are formed into four different lengths.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The process is straight-forward, not very interesting but not really unpleasant just repetitive. I may make about 20 of each size at a time.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Step one is to hack off the head a the common nail with the hydraulic forging press. That leaves a nice flat taper just like cutting off over the hardy. The press work is done cold and it is nearly effortless. A round taper is forged on both ends with torch heat. I have a special swage block dedicated to such small stock taper work.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The hook is finished by pulling the end curves on a jig. Each size stock has its own jig.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The reason I’ve bothered to post this is that it relates to the last post about creative dreaming. When I set out to make this batch of hooks I could only find a couple of old jigs so I figured I’d make new simple ones and get them collected and stored together, once and for all. As It turned out I did the designing of the new jigs in that awakening dream state.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The new jigs are all made with vise tangs of 3/16” x 1.25” x 3.5” angle. I have a whole drawer full of these on hand most of the time. If I run low I have a fabrication shop cut a 10’ stick with their Piranha shear and get another 34 of them. That saves a lot of time and bandsaw blade wear.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>In this case I used two of the angle pieces to make the vise tang. They are paired in an offset that lifts the working face away from the vise jaw and gives me space to clamp the tapered stock with a slim nose vise grip.</span></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">

<span style="font-kerning: none;">Typically I go to bed between 2100 and 2200. I guess I’m lucky in being able to fall asleep almost immediately and sleep soundly for six or seven hours. I usually awaken around 0330 and go to the bathroom. Nowadays, I get back in bed and start thinking about the projects I’m working on and their design issues. When I had a regular day job I would usually get up and do computer work instead of going back to bed. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I’ll spend a hour or so working in a creative visualization mode. I probably develop most of my best new ideas in that state. I’ve been aware of this tool for many years. Long ago I described it to someone who knew something about psychology and they told me it was called lucid dreaming.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Recently, I read the Wikipedia article about it. </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia" style="font-family: Helvetica;">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia</a> I suppose there are many variants and I have never experienced some of those the article discusses. What I experience has some dreamlike characteristics. I’m resting comfortably, eyes closed and seeing visual images. In contrast to my dreams which usually are composed of wandering and irrational, ridiculous images, the lucid state is completely in my control and rational. I can work through a project from stock selection to finished object in a stepwise manner. What is different is that I seem to think of more options or variations than had occurred to me in previous planning.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>This phenomena doesn’t happen every day. I’m most aware of it when I am actively working on designing projects. It might be more common during the long dark winter nights when I’m inclined to stay in bed longer anyway.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I’m in a pretty creative phase right now so I am experiencing the creative dreaming regularly. I think it may be something like a self-fulfilling prophesy - the more I believe in it the better it works. But, then again, it might just be an excuse to stay in a warm bed an hour longer</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>In February 2015 I described how I used 5-gallon bucket for storage of small items. Recently, I’ve decided to modify the way I do that.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>But wait! First, I’ll digress and explain why I have been remiss in making blog posts.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The past two years were mostly consumed making upgrades and repairs and replacements to our home and yard while attending to all the things which deteriorate over thirty-five years of living.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The culmination came this fall when I had a concrete driveway poured to the shop associated with other walk and driveway repair at the house.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Besides being a great convenience, I see the shop driveway as a necessary addition as I approach the time when I’ll have to part with the equipment I built and otherwise accumulated to do metalworking. When that day comes a forklift will be essential and a driveway will be essential for using the forklift.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>It has been my great good fortune to have a wonderful couple come and help make a major transition in my shop. I’ve finished doing commission work and just want to make items for our gallery and reduce the inventory of partially worked things which still crowd my workspace.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I can see clearly now what I will use and what I will not use. My friends worked for days making the metamorphosis happen. They moved, cleaned, organized and removed things. Some things they took home and I hope they find those things are really useful to them. We made several trips to the steel recycling facility and one to the landfill. Even so, I still have a long way to go.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>So, what about the bucket rack? Overall my plan worked pretty well. I could always find the things I stored there and the plastic bags did keep water out. However, the plastic bags eventually degrade and lose some effectiveness so it looks like replacement about every two years will be necessary.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The bigger nuisance came from Carolina wrens finding they could move the plastic enough to create a cavity the perfect size for nest building. I like the birds so after they have a nest going I feel obliged to leave them undisturbed which means I can’t get into that bucket. They actually have several other sheltered places on the porch to nest so I just need to make the buckets less inviting.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"></span><br /></div>
<br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-kerning: none;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>This is my plan. Most buckets are only partially filled. I plan to see that they are completely filled so when the plastic bag is tied the exposed surface is bulging, convex, and offers no cavity possibility. I will accomplish that by crumpling newspaper into small clear plastic waste basket bags forming appropriate sized plugs. I’ll try to remember to post some images when I actually get that done. I may also make some more nest sites by cutting a three-inch hole in plastic milk cartons.</span></div>

<span style="font-kerning: none;">Here in East Central Kansas we are suffering a heat wave. Not a record one but miserable none the less. On top of that the AC in my shop developed a leak and required repair so I have missed so forging time there. I hope that in a week or so I can get in some early morning forge time. Meanwhile I will keep busy doing some small fabrication projects for my own use, tall sprinklers, and doing computer work. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Today I attended a members meeting at the Prairie PastTimes Gallery in Cottonwood Falls, KS. I was looking over some of the display areas and noticed a piece on iron hardware on an old step ladder which was seeing service as a display rack.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; line-height: normal; min-height: 17px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The rusty iron object caught my attention and I immediately thought it looked familiar. On closer examination I realized it was very similar, perhaps identical, to the artifact I had recently been asked to help identify. Bingo.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Recently, I received an image from: Lonnie Baker <lbaker1113 icloud.com=""> and he asked if I knew what it might be. <br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Thursday, July 16, 2015</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; min-height: 17px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I turned on the tumbler as I left at 1600. About a minute later a heard a thump and the tumbler stopped turning. I went back in and found the exhaust fan and the tumbler motor were still running. I turned off the fan and the timer switch. A quick inspection revealed a small ring of steel had fallen onto the chain and the shaft of the gear box broke off. Big trouble. I pulled the service cord to the motor and left for the night.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; min-height: 17px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>A neighbor friend, Tom, is an engineer retired from the army reserve. He seems to know about everything there is to know about engineering and some other things too so I consulted him. He agreed to help me take apart the gear motor and see what would be required to get the tumbler running again.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; min-height: 17px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The next morning, Saturday, we took the gear-motor off the tumbler and disassembled the gearbox. It is a right angle worm gear design. The damage was clearly visible. The 1” shaft to the roller chain sprocket was broken and the brass gear had a number of sheared off teeth. We did a lot of degreasing and put all the relevant parts in the vehicle but had to wait until Monday to consult with an industrial bearing company.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; min-height: 17px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>On Monday we learned that they don’t rebuild anything but would try to find parts for us but ultimately weren’t successful. Tom did some further checking and gave me a number to call. I called and found that a brand new synchrogear motor would cost $960 + freight. The E435 gearbox alone would cost $480 + freight and that is what I ordered.</div>

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Tom came over at about 1000 and we started working on the rebuild. With one trip to a farm and ranch store we found all the additional parts we needed. Finished at 1630. A hard day with Tom doing most of the work. We added an idler sprocket to take up chain slack. And we also made some changes in the guards so at the end I’m in better mechanical shape than before the break-down.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; min-height: 17px;">

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>A painful experience like this should provoke some thinking about ways it might have been prevented or mitigated. Considering that it took the two of us over six hours to complete the job I may well have been better off just buying a new motor.</div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; min-height: 17px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>It occurred to me that If I had built the tumbler in a manner similar to my hydraulic press and the reversing bar twister I may have been better off. In those cases the motor connects to the driven component through a Lovejoy coupler. That makes them modular so either component can be dealt with independently.</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Since then I’ve changed my method a bit. Now I just use Gorilla tape. I pull off about 8” or so of the two-inch wide tape and rip it down the middle to get two 1” strips. These easily wrap adjacent to the handle end-stop. Over time they compress and make a very effective and durable pinch-preventing bumper.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>My friend Wayne and I exchanged email for about three months trying to work out a date to make a trip to the coal mine. Fortunately it has been too hot to forge for a while so I haven’t been needing it to stay busy. My bin probably didn’t have 50 pounds left in it when we set off for Oklahoma Wednesday morning.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; min-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Wayne and Dianne arrived here about 0830 with a trailer which could carry 2 1/2 tons. I drove my Pickup which could carry a ton and picked up my friend Tom to ride along for interesting conversation and driving help.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; min-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>We stopped in Coffeyville for lunch then proceeded to the mine. Wayne had made arrangement for us to get a tour of the strip mine so we did that before loading. When I made my first trip to the mine some years ago they were working a seam about eight miles north of the grinding/screening site where the scale house is located. They have finished working there and it is reclaimed and back in grass. The site we got to see is a mile or so southwest of the pick-up site.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; min-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>We followed the supervisor to the hole and walked around to spots where we could look down and watch the heavy machinery working. The coal seam is 12”-18” thick and about 50 feet below the surface. They use huge dozers to move away the overburden and create the sloping drive path down to the coal seam. A thin cover is left over the seam until the actual coal removal process begins.</div>
<div style="font-family: arial; min-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial;">
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>A mining shovel creates a high-wall and bites away at it and fills haul trucks which drive the overburden up to the surface and dump. A high-dump coal loader scoops up the coal and fills the trucks which move the coal to the crusher site. After the coal has been taken away the backfill process begins.</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>After the tour we drove back to the scale house and weighed in and drove to where the stoker coal was piled. The operator of the high-dump loader was very patient and accommodating, as usual. His bucket holds close to three tons and we only need to load a fraction of that. He cannot see my pickup bed from the cab so it takes some guiding to get loaded without getting buried. I take rakes, shovel and broom so I can fill every bit of the bed and clean up. It takes the operator three lifts to complete our fill as we work to rearrange the coal between each drop. It was hot and dry but not windy and the sprinkler trucks had been watering the roads so it was the cleanest trip I have experienced.</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>I remain somewhat astonished and grateful for the friendly and patient attention we receive from every person I have encountered at the mine. I feel sort of guilty for bothering them with our pitifully small purchases which cause them more trouble than their big customers.</div>

In my late teen years I became reasonably accomplished at playing pool and snooker. One summer some of my parents friends were visiting and we got to talking about pool and Frank, who was just a little younger than my father said we ought to go to the hall and play a game. I was looking forward to getting the best of an adult. Didn’t happen. Frank ran the table. I was dumbfounded and he just said, “The joys of a misspent youth.” It was the first time I recall hearing the expression. He proceeded to tell me stories about mischief he got into during the depression years.</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Today I was poking around the web looking for some design inspiration and came across Alec Steele’s blog. Lots of nice blacksmithing images. He took up the craft at age 11 and stayed with it and is now quite good. I’ve never met him but I enjoyed visiting his website. He has spent quite a bit of time with Brian Brazeal as his mentor. It looks to me like he’s finding a lot of joy in the work and not misspending his youth.</div>
